Secrets to Happiness

Happiness is essential to living a good life, and working towards that good life requires happiness to make it work. Instead of relying on outside factors such as material goods for happiness, here are 10 secrets to creating happiness on your own.

Number one– let go of negative expectations

It’s extremely unlikely for everything to go to plan, but you also shouldn’t assume nothing will go to plan. Don’t worry about specific results, whether they’re negative or even positive.

Go with the flow and you will understand how it all comes together.

Secrets to Happiness Number two: Define happiness for yourself.

Being a millionaire makes some people happy, and simply having enough to pay the bills makes others ecstatic.

Don’t compare your idea of happiness to another, and don’t let someone else tell you what should or should not make you happy.

Number three– commit to things that make you happy.

Fully commit to the things that bring you joy. Don’t leave it up to willpower alone. Whether it’s a new hobby or a new job, put all of your effort into it.

Otherwise, it becomes easy to blame outside circumstances. You work for your own happiness after all.

Number fourlearn to be grateful for what you already have.

People practicing gratitude experience stronger immune systems, better sleep, and a greater will to forgive.

Take some time every day to write down what you’re grateful for, and soon you will reap the benefits… and be grateful for those too.

Always Be Grateful

Number five– let the love show.

You probably assume that your family, friends, and loved ones know that you love them, but saying you do can go a long way. Most people will be surprised by being told they’re loved out of the blue.

Bring happiness to others and it will find its way into your own life.

Secrets to Happiness Number six– make your hobbies work for you.

Find your vision and goals, and pick up hobbies that will help you get there.

It’s okay to have hobbies that are purely leisure, but those that benefit your future are more likely to bring you true happiness.

Try exercising to meet a fitness goal, or practicing writing to eventually publish a book.

Number seven– do it now.

You know how bad procrastination can be, but most people don’t do much to stop it. Live in the present, and achieve this by small means.

If something can be done in two minutes or less, like picking up your clothes or sending a thank you email, do it as soon as you remember.

Happy people live in the now, but they don’t ignore the future either. Focus on the important, essential, and every little thing you are grateful for.

Keep pushing towards better days every single day, and happiness will become part of your life.

Number eight– scare yourself.

You grow by new experiences, and this comes from stepping out of your comfort zone. Ask that person you like out, schedule that dentist appointment, or call your parents after months of not speaking.

Experiencing a fleeting moment of fear can help you to appreciate happiness, and it will make you proud.

Secrets to Happiness Number nine– remember urgency isn’t always priority.

Urgent matters can push themselves into being the only thing you think about, whether or not they’re truly important.

Important things are not always urgent, so it can be easy to ignore these. Something important to you, like reading a book before bed or taking an extra-long shower, isn’t urgent.

If it’s important at all, treat it with the same focus as truly urgent matters.

Number ten– chase the best, not the good.

Don’t let every good thing distract you, or you may become too comfortable where you are. Always look at the future and how things can be better.

If you get an offer to take that first class seat, but it’s on a later flight that causes you to be late to a meeting, think about it. Is the good of a comfy seat worth potentially forwarding your career?

Happy people live in the now, but they don’t ignore the future either.

Focus on the important, essential, and every little thing you are grateful for.

Keep pushing towards better days every single day, and happiness will become part of your life.
